2010 Spring Gardening Classes

Half-day classes include time in the gardens with a hands-on project, as well as classroom lessons. Participants leave with a new skill and reference materials. To register, call (928) 774-1442, ext. 110, or e-mail us.

Composting Class

Date: May 8 | Time: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM | Instructor: Whitney Rooney

Participants will learn the various methods of both indoor composting with red worms and outdoor composting with various styles of compost bins. Learn about the necessary components for a functioning compost pile. Find out how to build the ideal compost bin for your home garden. Participants will make a red worm bin (with worms) to take home. Additional $10 materials fee.

Design Workshop

Date: May 8 | Time: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM | Instructor: Mark Jarecki

Add a personal touch to your yard by attending a landscape design workshop. Develop skills in residential garden design through classroom presentations and hands-on activities. Participants will be introduced to basic design principles, including scale, form, texture, and color of landscape elements. Topics will include proper plant selection and placement, as well as the use of plants, structures, and hardscape to define a space.

How to Build a Rock Garden

Date: May 22 | Time: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM | Instructor: Whitney Rooney

Find out what it takes to build a successful rock garden. Participants will help build a rock garden on the grounds of the Arboretum while learning some basic techniques of hardscaping, soil amendment, planting, irrigation, and overall design. A complete instruction manual and plant list will be provided.

Water Feature Workshop

Enhance the beauty of your yard by adding a water feature you create yourself. This workshop will focus on the design, installation, and maintenance of residential ponds. Learn basic pond design and proper installation through both classroom and hands-on instruction.
