A free course on the peoples, flora and fauna, and places of the Plateau from a historical perspective. Maps, photographs, a useful glossary, and numerous links to further articles expanding on topics in the text. The Grand Canyon Trust - Describes the Trust's current focus on preserving the environmental integrity of Arizona. See their volunteer program for ways of getting involved. Crust of Life - A layman's course in the ecology of western soils. Of interest to serious gardeners, young science students, and professionals in related fields. Arid Lands Newsletter - Twice-a-year publication of the University of Arizona on many topics related to desert life around the world. Land Restoration - An interesting and unusual approach to restoring exhausted land. Environmental EducationRocky Mountain Research Station, Flagstaff Lab - A very large educational site for researchers, parents and teachers. Concentrates on Flagstaff and northern Arizona. Some excellent links, especially the Forest Service links. Patience and time are needed to explore all the links of interest to you. The Nature Conservancy - A world-wide organization aimed at "preserving the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive." Currently has 1,400 nature preserves, several open to the public in Arizona, including the Hart Prairie preserve near Flagstaff. Membership includes opportunities for travel and local field trips, magazine and E-newsletter, chances to volunteer, etc. Conservation Education - A very rich resource for teachers, with lesson plans for children of all ages. Click on "Curricular Resources". Building Wildlife Habitats - National Wildlife Federation education programs for families and schools. Specific how-to's on building different kinds of habitats in your garden, schoolyard, workplace, or community. Butterflies of Arizona and North America - What kind of a butterfly is that, and where do you see them? Photos, descriptions and maps for students, scientists, and gardeners. Has further links to fact sheets on raising butterflies and attracting them to your garden. Highlands Center for Natural History - Serving the central Arizona highlands, this organization offers environmental education classes, publications, and tours and hands-on activities at their two sites near Prescott to adults, parents and kids, and teachers and school children. High Country Raptors -Provide educational programs in northern Arizona about native and exotic raptors. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of wild birds of prey.
Birding in Northern ArizonaNorthern Arizona Audubon Society - A revised and expanded website of birding activities and information in northern Arizona and beyond. Getting to the specifics of local birding activities takes more time and patience than their previous website. Click on the menus running across the top of the Home page for guidance. Try e-mailing the webmaster with suggestions to make the site easier to use. White Mountains Audubon Society - Many contacts and resources regarding birding in east-central Arizona, meetings and field trips, plus links to other groups focused on conservation. Hummingbirds - If you're fascinated by hummers, this site is a feast. Photos, detailed descriptions, articles, Q's and A's, plants to attract them, and more. The Hummingbird Society - Offers membership, photographs, information, links. Arboretum Bird List - Names of nearly one hundred birds that have been sighted at The Arboretum.
