"Arb-Inspired Art"

Botanical Illustrations by Deborah Shepard

Deborah Shepard moved to Flagstaff from the East Coast in 2006 and retired from the landscape gardening business. Her botanical illustrations are inspired by nature and her love of plants. She has traded the shovel and rake for color pencils, pens, ink and paper - less sweat and much easier on the back. Her first images reflect the flowers found on hikes exploring Flagstaff - pansies, sunflowers, hollyhocks, penstemon - drawn from live specimens which can't be put off and photographs for those plants too delicate to remove from their natural environment.

For her first show at The Arboretum, Ms. Shepard combined common Arboretum objects and elements with plants and created her first landscape scenes - the ones that worked are on display for visitors to enjoy - the others are waiting for additional inspiration. She is a 2007 graduate of the Docent program at The Arboretum and enjoys sharing her love of plants and gardening with local residents and visitors alike.

Ms. Shepard's artwork will be on display in the Visitors' Center through May.
