Heating the Arboretum can be a difficult and expensive task. Given our long winters and cold temperatures, the Arboretum installed a wood pellet heating system to maximize efficiency and minimize costs.

The wood pellet heating system at the Arboretum is a great benefit to the local environment by finding an end use for the abundance of local small diameter wood. Northern Arizona has an abundance of small diameter ponderosas. Lately, there has been a push to reduce tree numbers and therefore reduce wildfire danger.
