2008 Summer Concert Series

Americana and the Great Beyond

Acoustic guitars take center stage this summer for an expanded Arboretum concert series.  Folk, country and bluegrass-inspired singer/songwriters will fill most of the summer program, entitled "Americana and the Great Beyond".  Enjoy The Arboretum's outdoor amphitheater in a family friendly environment starting on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 24.  This year we are adding a Sunday show as well on August 31.  Greg Reiter and Puerta Del Sol will return to play Flamenco and classical guitar music with jazz influences.  Rounding out the season, we are very proud to be able to bring in Julie Gribble, originally from Georgia, and Terri Hendrix from Texas, who will each perform their original alternative folk ballads.

All concerts take place from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.   Bring a picnic dinner and blanket or concert chairs for an evening outdoors under the cool pines with a magnificent view of the San Francisco Peaks.

Prices for season concert series (all six concerts):  Members $55; non-members $60.  Individual concerts: Members $10; non-members $12.   To order your tickets in advance, or for more information, contact Stephen England at (928) 774-1442, ext 124, or e-mail Stephen.England@nau.edu

Tickets may also be purchased at Arizona Music Pro and Rainbow's End in downtown Flagstaff.

May 24 - Laura Gibson

Laura Gibson’s music has been championed by NPR,  lauded by the New York Times, and featured at show-and-tell in her nephew’s kindergarten class.  She thanks her lucky stars for these opportunities.... Released in 2006, her debut full-length album "if you come to greet me" made its way into the hands of the folks at Hush Records, who were endeared to Laura's delicate songs and gentle spirit. http://www.myspace.com/lauragibson

June 7 - Julie Gribble

Music gives Julie Gribble the means to express the rare and inviting personality this Georgia native was born with.  She grew up writing poetry, which led to song writing, and, after only a dozen guitar lessons, she combined the two.  It became her purpose.  She received the 2005 L.A. music award for best adult alternative artist, 2nd place in the American Idol underground competition which featured her as one of the best emerging artists of 2006.  Julie has also been featured in Music Connection magazine’s hot 100 unsigned bands for both 2005 and 2006, as well as the top 25 demo critiques, 2006.

August 31 -
Greg Reiter and Puerta Del Sol

Reading, PA born Greg Reiter has devoted 35 years to mastering the many forms of guitar music.  His adventure in music has taken him to New York , Washington DC, and London, where he was the lead guitarist for a "nwobhm" group. Greg has devoted himself exclusively to Flamenco/Classical Guitar.  His influences include Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, and many others. Greg released his first flamenco-inspired CD, Fireflies , in 1996. When asked about this particular form, he says "Flamenco guitar is a form that I believe to be the most powerful to convey emotions." His love for music and life has him ready to tour. "Life is an adventure, and my music continues to take me to many new exciting places, both imaginary, and real." http://www.gregreiter.com/

September 6 - Terri Hendrix

“One fan at a time” was one of the two goals Terri Hendrix set for herself at the beginning of her music career.  The second was considerably more ambitious: to “own her own universe.”  Terri has gone her own way, and along the way she won “Best Singer-songwriter,” “Best Folk Act” and “Best New Band” at the Austin music awards. But even a state as big as Texas couldn’t fence her in.  With endless touring and widespread roots, Americana and Public Radio support, Terri’s fan base soon spread like wildflowers from coast to coast and all the way to Europa.  http://www.terrihendrix.com/
