Table 1.  Details of calculations for fecundity matrix elements.

Matrix Element Formulae for Calculation Definitions References
1-1 S * P S = (4/(Initial seeds*S1/2-one year seedlings)) 1/3
S = 0.22 or annual seed survival in seed bank (Table 3, Maschinski et al. 2004)
P= 0.26 annual survival after seed predation (Chambers 2001)
1-2 (S ½) *P*G *(seedling survival)* CF G= Germination rate; average from second (0.0245) and third years (0.0565) = 0.0405 (Table 3)
    Seedling survival to first census = 0.47 (Maschinski et al. 2004)
    P= 0.26 annual survival after seed predation (Chambers 2001)

CF= (observed seedlings/adult)/ (predicted seedlings/adult)   year specific correction factor to adjust for overestimation of observed seedlings in demographic plots compared to estimates of seedling recruitment from the caged experiment values.  When no recruitment occurred (1996 and 1999), we used the minimum non-zero value.

5-1 F*P*(1-g)*S

F = average observed number of seeds per reproductive adult

g = first year germination (Table 3)
P= 0.26 annual survival after seed predation (Chambers 2001)
S = 0.22 or annual seed survival in seed bank (Table 3)
5-2 (OS * ENS) / OR OS = observed number of seedlings
    OR = observed number of reproductive adults

ENS = estimated proportion of seedlings germinated in year n from seeds produced in n-1 = 0.93
