I am thrilled to be part of the gorgeous Arboretum gift shop sharing my gemstone suncatchers and wildflower
luminaries. It has been an adventurous journey getting here. I was born and raised in southern California and received a
Bachelor of Arts in Biology from California State Polytechnic University and a Master of Science in Biology from Northern
Arizona University. My master’s thesis involved studying the response of reptiles and amphibians to ponderosa pine
forest thinning, burning, and combined treatments. I taught science at the secondary, community college, and
university levels between 1994 and 2020, will celebrate my 32nd wedding anniversary with my dear husband Bill this
year, and am blessed with two grown talented, sweet sons. I must mention my two sweet dogs also, a Labrador
retriever and a Labradoodle, who are my favorite hiking, wildflower/rock picking companions. Besides hiking and
collecting wildflowers and rocks, I enjoy camping, observing wildlife, gardening, reading, cooking, playing the piano,
dancing, singing, yoga, and, of course, creating art. I’ve had a passion for rocks and gems since childhood after I started
collecting Lake Superior agates in northern Minnesota where my family spent summer vacation. A favorite teaching
topic of mine was the electromagnetic spectrum. And who doesn’t love rainbows? So, I combined gems and crystals to
create rainbow suncatchers! My suncatchers are made with natural gemstones, silver-plated or copper wire and crystal
prisms, and most depict the gorgeous landscape, flora, and fauna of the southwest. My little sister inspired me to press
local wildflowers and make luminaries after a visit to Sunset Crater National Monument. She gathered some wildflowers
there, pressed and framed them, and encouraged me to create more wildflower art. Several flower species in my
luminaries come from my garden plants that were bought right here at The Arboretum.
