Good to Know

While it is certainly irresistible to plant throughout spring and summer, fall is an ideal time to get perennials in the ground for next year’s garden.

As the heat and rapid growth of summer wane, there is a stillness and sense of completion in the September garden. However, there is still lots to do and enjoy as we cherish these fleeting days on our slow march to winter.

With the extra water, humidity, and cooler temperatures of monsoon season, it feels like a second spring as many of our garden plants come into bloom. Here are some of Nate’s favorites.

When northern Arizona welcomes the monsoon season, plants far and wide bloom and burst with life from the much-needed rain. One spectacular plant blooming in abundance here at The Arb is Rudbeckia laciniata.

We recently completed a successful seed collection trip for one of our smallest microflora species: Sentry Milkvetch (Astragalus cremnophylax).

Two incredible flowers bloom at the same time here in Flagstaff: golden combines and rocky mountain penstemons. What’s fascinating is that they grow in very different environments.
